Highland Lakes Dental is a locally owned, independent dental practice in the heart of Leesburg, Florida. We are not part of a corporate chain, and that is by design. Every decision we make, from the technology we invest in to the way we greet patients at the door, is shaped by what is best for the people we care for, not what is best for a board of directors.
For years, families across Leesburg, The Villages, Fruitland Park, and the surrounding Lake County communities have made Highland Lakes Dental their long-term dental home. They come for the quality of care and stay for the way our team treats them, like neighbors, not numbers.

Highland Lakes Dental is proud to be a woman-led practice. Our three dentists each bring their own background, training, and personality to the team, but they all share the same approach: gentle hands, careful eyes, and a real interest in the people sitting in their chair.
Dr. Ishbel Nieves-Reyes, D.M.D.
Practice Owner and Lead General Dentist
Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Dr. Nieves has called Lake County home since 2008 and has proudly owned Highland Lakes Dental since 2011. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Biology with an emphasis in Human Anatomy from the University of Puerto Rico in 2003, then went on to receive her Doctorate in Dental Medicine from the University of Puerto Rico School of Dental Medicine in 2007.
After dental school, she completed a General Practice Residency at the Malcolm Randall VA Medical Center in Gainesville, where she gained valuable experience caring for medically complex patients and deepened her knowledge of oral and facial pain.
Dr. Nieves is an active member of the American Dental Association, the Florida Dental Association, and the Lake County Dental Society. She believes ongoing education is the key to providing the most up-to-date care, and she takes pride in helping every patient understand their oral health and reach their version of a healthy, happy smile. Spanish-speaking patients are always welcome.
She lives in Groveland with her husband Erik. Outside of the office, she enjoys reading, running, kayaking, and traveling internationally to experience new cultures.
Dr. Poonam Popat, D.M.D.
Associate General Dentist
Dr. Popat grew up in Orlando and earned her Bachelor's degree in Microbiology and Molecular Biology from the University of Central Florida in 2009. She went on to complete her Doctorate in Dental Medicine at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale in 2013.
After graduating, she began practicing as a general dentist and has continued her education ever since to bring the most up-to-date care to her patients. Her approach is rooted in customization, every treatment plan is tailored to the patient in her chair, with the goal of helping them feel confident in their smile and their oral health. She joined the Highland Lakes Dental team in 2021.
Dr. Popat married her husband Preet in 2017 and is mom to her son Shayden and her daughter Kahani. The family spent time in Austin, Texas, where she discovered a love for hiking and food trucks, before moving back to Florida to be near family. When she is not at the office, she enjoys traveling internationally and going on adventures with her loved ones.
Dr. Sara Elizabeth Moore, D.M.D.
Associate General Dentist
A Florida native from St. Cloud, Dr. Moore has a deep passion for patient-centered dental care. She graduated from the Burnett Honors College at the University of Central Florida in 2019 with a Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Sciences and a minor in Psychology, then earned her Doctorate in Dental Medicine from the University of Louisville School of Dentistry in Kentucky.
Dr. Moore knows that dental anxiety is common, and she has built her practice style around making every patient feel comfortable, heard, and at ease. Her goal is to deliver thorough, compassionate dental care while creating positive, trusting experiences her patients can count on visit after visit.
Outside of dentistry, Dr. Moore is a proud Star Wars fan, an avid weight lifter, and a video game enthusiast. She loves exploring local restaurants and spending time with her two cats, Naboo and Sabine.
Dr. Marissa Crandall Cruz
Visiting Periodontist
Dr. Crandall Cruz joins the Highland Lakes Dental team a few times each month to provide specialized periodontal care for our patients. As a periodontist, she focuses on the health of the gums and the bone that support your teeth, along with the surgical placement and restoration of dental implants.
Having a periodontist in-house means our patients can receive advanced gum and implant care from a trusted specialist, in the same comfortable office they already know and without being referred out to an unfamiliar practice. Dr. Crandall Cruz partners closely with Dr. Nieves and our team to coordinate every step of your care, from initial evaluation through treatment and recovery.

Chenessa, R.D.H.
Registered Dental Hygienist | Team Member Since 2017
Chenessa originally hails from Minnesota, but Florida won her heart in 2003. She earned her Associate of Science degree in Dental Hygiene from Valencia College in 2014 and joined Highland Lakes Dental in 2017. Her favorite part of the job is watching patients leave the office feeling relaxed, refreshed, and more confident than when they walked in. She is known for cleanings that are both thorough and gentle, always tailored to what each patient needs.
When she is not in the office, Chenessa loves spending time with her husband, daughters, and friends. Whether it is a vacation, a Florida staycation, a thrill at a theme park, or a cozy movie night on the couch, she treasures every moment with the people she loves.

Registered Dental Hygienist | Team Member Since 2023
Monica was born and raised in Venezuela and made the move to Florida in 2016. She began her journey in the dental field in 2017 and currently works as a dental hygienist. Her passion lies in helping patients maintain optimal health by teaching preventive care techniques. Monica is dedicated to educating individuals on the importance of oral hygiene to enhance their overall well-being.
Outside of her professional life, Monica enjoys spending time in the sun at the beach or exploring new destinations through travel with her husband and friends.
Luz, R.D.H.
Registered Dental Hygienist | Team Member Since 2022
Luz began her dental career in her home country of Colombia, where she graduated from dental school. She moved to the United States with her family 20 years ago and earned her certification as a dental hygienist soon after. She joined the Highland Lakes Dental team in 2022 and quickly became a patient favorite, known for her technical skill, warmth, and genuine care.
When she is not at work, Luz loves spending time with her family, riding her bike, walking her dog, and being out in nature whenever she can.
Elizabeth, R.D.H.
Registered Dental Hygienist | Team Member Since 2020
Elizabeth started her career as a dental assistant before going on to become a dentist in her home country of Colombia. In 2002, she moved to the United States and began practicing as a dental hygienist, a role she still loves today. Patients and coworkers alike are drawn to her optimistic outlook and the way she makes every interaction feel welcoming.
Outside of the office, Elizabeth treasures time with her children, Sofi and Nico. She loves being outdoors and spends much of her free time kayaking and taking long, leisurely walks in nature.
Sondra, R.D.H.
Registered Dental Hygienist | Team Member Since 2026
Sondra is a Florida native with extensive experience as a dental hygienist across Florida, Texas, and North Carolina. Throughout her career, she has worked in a wide range of dental settings, including endodontics, cosmetic dentistry, oral surgery, and periodontics, giving her a well-rounded clinical background that benefits every patient she sees.
Sondra is known for her expertise in preventive and periodontal care, radiography, oral cancer screening, local anesthetic administration, and patient education. She is deeply committed to patient advocacy and believes every patient deserves clear communication, thorough care, and a comfortable experience at every visit.
Sondra earned her Associate of Applied Science in Dental Hygiene from Valencia State College, along with additional dental assistant training. She holds current professional licensure and certifications in dental hygiene, local anesthetic administration, nitrous oxide monitoring, and BLS.
Outside of work, family is always her top priority. Sondra has been an avid scuba diver since 1992 and also enjoys water and snow skiing, hiking, and kayaking.

Julisa
Insurance Verification Specialist | Team Member Since 2018
Jennifer is a dedicated dental professional with extensive experience in general dentistry and oral surgery. Originally from New York, she met her husband while living in Spain in her early twenties, and together they built a life centered around family, travel, and meaningful connections. In 2012, Jennifer and her family relocated to Florida, where she became a valued member of the team at Highland Lakes.
Jennifer takes pride in helping patients feel informed, comfortable, and confident throughout their treatment experience. Her attention to detail and commitment to personalized care have made her a trusted presence among both patients and colleagues.
Outside the office, Jennifer enjoys spending time with her husband, two children, and their beloved dogs, Simba and Lola. Whether hiking, relaxing at the beach, or exploring new destinations with her family, she embraces every opportunity to create lasting memories and enjoy life's adventures.
Anthony
Patient Care Coordinator | Team Member Since 2023
Anthony moved to Florida with his family in 2017 from Philadelphia. Anthony treasures moments spent with his family and their two dogs, Jaxon and Chase. Anthony joined the dental field in 2019, where he has not only gained valuable expertise but also developed exceptional dental customer service skills. Anthony understands the importance of empathy, clear communication, and a reassuring demeanor in the dental setting, making him an asset to our practice.
Apart from his career, Anthony has a passion for delving into historical events and social studies literature. He finds joy in expanding his knowledge in these areas, and this curiosity not only enriches his personal life but also adds depth to his interactions with others. Anthony possesses an impressive talent for shopping and finding great deals. His knack for spotting bargains showcases his practical skills and adds a delightful flair to his personality.
Michelle
Office Manager | Team Member Since 2021
Michelle is originally from Long Island, New York, and moved to Florida in 2021. She began her healthcare career in 2016 and entered the dental field in 2019. In 2024, Michelle graduated from Valencia College with a degree in healthcare administration. She enjoys helping patients better understand their treatment plans and is passionate about supporting her team in delivering high-quality patient care.
At home, Michelle enjoys spending time with her husband and children, playing board games, enjoying lake days, and working on art projects. In her free time, she loves reading a good book.
Steffaine
Patient Account Specialist | Team Member Since 2024
Steffanie was born in Japan and traveled the world as a child in the military. She moved to Florida from Virginia Beach in 2007 and has proudly built her career in the dental field since 2005. She enjoys the challenge of getting claims paid for our patients when insurance wants to deny coverage that should rightfully be paid.
What started as a position as a dental assistant quickly became a true passion for helping patients and being part of a profession that changes lives, brings comfort, and builds confidence. Through dedication and years of experience, she advanced into administrative roles while continuing to grow her love for the dental field and patient care.
Outside of work, Steffanie has a son currently serving active duty in the United States Marine Corps. She stays busy with her 4 dogs and tends to her hobby farm, which keeps her active when she's not working. She is married to her best friend, and together they enjoy fishing, being on the water, and cruising in their spare time. Steffanie also has a deep passion for music and loves attending music festivals when the opportunity arises!
Kimberly
Patient Care Coordinator | Team Member Since 2025
Kim is a proud Florida native, devoted wife, mother of three, and grandmother of six. Family is at the heart of everything she does. She is passionate about helping people feel cared for and building lasting relationships. Kim brings the same warmth and care to the office each day, making her a dependable part of our dental team.
With over 20 years of experience in the dental field, Kim has extensive knowledge of the day-to-day operations of the front office. She takes pride in creating a welcoming and organized environment for every patient who walks through the door. As a dedicated front office professional, Kim understands the importance of customer service, clear communication, and helping patients feel comfortable from check-in to checkout.
In her free time, she enjoys boating, spending time outdoors, and traveling to the mountains to relax and recharge.
Ava
Patient Care Coordinator | Team Member Since 2025
Ava loves creating a welcoming and organized experience for patients from the moment they walk into the office. She enjoys helping patients with anything they need and making sure everything on her side runs smoothly to help their visit feel as stress-free and comfortable as possible.
Outside of the dental office, Ava is a licensed esthetician certified in dermaplaning and chemical peels. She completed her esthetics training in April 2026 and plans to continue expanding her education through additional courses and certifications. Her passion for esthetics started from her own love of beauty and self-care, and she enjoys helping others feel confident and beautiful in themselves as well.
In her free time, Ava enjoys doing her own nails, spending time with her cat and family, and continuing to learn more about the beauty industry.

A New York native, Jennifer met her husband in her early 20s after moving to Spain. The couple still travels back to Spain often as a family. They relocated to Florida in 2012, when Jennifer joined the Highland Lakes Dental team. With 30 years in the dental field, she has deep, well-rounded experience in general dentistry and especially in oral surgery. Her patients love how she takes the time to make sure they understand their treatment and feel comfortable every step of the way.
Outside of work, Jennifer is mom to two beautiful children and dog mom to Simba and Lola, a pair of Cocker Spaniel and Poodle mixes who joined the family in 2018. She loves hiking, beach days, and traveling with her family to new places.

Born in Venezuela, Bianca began her education in dentistry there before continuing her studies in the United States. She earned her Dental Assistant Expanded Functions certificate from the University of Florida while simultaneously completing her Associate's degree from Valencia College. Dentistry has been her dream since childhood, and at Highland Lakes Dental, she puts her diverse skill set to work every day, including expertise in dental assisting, front office operations, and dental insurance.
In her free time, Bianca loves traveling, staying active, and going to live music performances. She has a great eye for jewelry and accessories and is always happy to share style tips with her coworkers.

Vilmarie, originally from Puerto Rico, earned a bachelor's degree in communications from the University of Puerto Rico and later pursued her dental assisting studies at the University of Florida. Her enthusiasm for continuous learning is evident as she embraces her career with joy, learning something new every day. Since joining the Highland Lakes team, Vilmarie has seamlessly transitioned between different departments, showcasing her versatility and capability to conquer any task with a smile.

Beyond her career, Kathy's personal life shines just as brightly. Kathy and her husband, Ernesto, cherish the time they get to spend with their wonderful children and grandchildren. They enjoy cruising the lake on their boat, motorcycle rides, and the vibrant atmosphere of festivals. When she is not in scrubs, Latasha is a proud Iowa Hawkeyes fan and a serious health and wellness enthusiast. She has competed in powerlifting events and fundraisers, loves riding motorcycles, and enjoys beach days with her husband and daughter.

LaToya was born and raised in Florida and has over 8 years of experience in the dental field. She began her career as a business associate and later advanced her skills to become a certified dental assistant. LaToya uses her combined expertise to provide excellent patient care. She is passionate about helping patients feel comfortable and confident during their dental visit. Her coworkers and patients know her for her warm personality and strong, professional work ethic.
